Arkema-ArrMaz is excited to present at Beneficiation of Phosphates IX, an ECI Conference Series. Join us at the conference to discuss important issues focused on phosphate mineral processing and wet process phosphoric acid production. Guoxin Wang, Senior Director, Global Mining Chemical Technologies, is presenting two topics on June 6; one presentation will dive into the new reagent systems for Florida phosphate ores, and the other presentation will tackle controlling foam to boost wet process phosphoric acid (WPA) production efficiency.
New Reagent Systems for Florida Phosphate Ores
Mineral producers are looking for safer and simpler ways to streamline the phosphate flotation process and improve performance. It is possible to achieve phosphate grade and recovery targets more simply and sustainably with safer and easier pH modification while removing potentially hazardous hydrocarbons. The key is to use a custom-developed reagent system and flotation reagents specifically designed for your unique phosphate ore. In this presentation, we’ll share our results from three different mineral processing operations.
Controlling Foam to Boost Wet Process Phosphoric Acid (WPA) Production
Are you dealing with an overabundance of foam during the WPA production? A major challenge that phosphoric acid producers face is understanding foaming and defoaming during WPA production to identify high-performance, cost-efficient defoamers. The addition of the right defoamer can improve plant performance and facilitate higher capacity utilization and optimal output of finished product. Learn more about WPA foam control and how to overcome foam challenges during WPA production in this presentation.

Arkema-Road Science’s Jeff Weitzel, Account Manager, and Mike Longshaw, Lead Field Engineer for RCI and High Strain Tolerant Mixes, were recently interviewed by AsphaltPro for their article on an innovative strain-tolerant mix project in Colorado. Working with the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and Arkema-Road Science, Coulson Excavating Company placed a reflective crack interlayer (RCI) on the southbound lanes and a new, innovative BR-ST (bituminous rich, ST 3/8 minus gradation) mix on the northbound lanes of the 4-mile section of State Highway 85 from Platteville to County Road 22. This project provides CDOT with a side-by-side comparison of RCI mix and BR-ST, a surface mix which has the same binder technology used in RCI mixes.
Arkema-Road Science worked closely with CDOT on the new BR-ST mix concept for this pilot project with the goal of evaluating whether BR-ST could achieve the same or better performance as RCI. CDOT has used RCI on previous projects, but this was the state’s first time using BR-ST. U.S. 85, which has experienced an 80 percent increase in truck traffic, was ideal for a side-by-side comparison to test out BR-ST’s crack mitigating properties. This project provides a unique opportunity to see how these mix designs perform comparatively, and specifically whether BR-ST could achieve the same flexibility of RCI mixes in a surface course to eliminate or delay cracking and extend pavement life.

The growing demand for food is driving the need for more specialized fertilizer blends. However, bulk fertilizer blending comes with significant handling challenges such as maintaining blend stability and granular integrity, and minimizing blend segregation. In the November/December issue of World Fertilizer, Arkema-ArrMaz’s Lucas R. Moore, Global Director of Coatings Technology, dives into the physical and chemical incompatibilities that must be considered when producing complex fertilizer blends and how the right coating can help.
Today’s coatings can be custom-formulated to target specific goals and meet industry needs. With the appropriate coating, incompatible fertilizer blends can become manageable, thus opening the door to more complex, tailor-made blends. Innovative coatings developed with the 4R principles in mind can enhance fertilizer performance in the field by improving blend compatibility and uniformity, and reducing blend segregation.
When producing a high-quality product for crop nutrition, the consistency and integrity of fertilizer granules are critical. Granulation aids help achieve this by building granule mass, increasing crush strength, improving size distribution and reducing recycling volumes during manufacturing. The right granulation aid may also provide a range of secondary benefits that make the fertilizer product more marketable.
Granulation aids can also make granules more prone to crumbling due to moisture absorption, so binder selection is unique to the individual fertilizer, the type of granulation process, and the end-user exact needs. When selecting a granulation aid, key factors must be considered. In the Nov/Dec Fertilizer International issue, Arkema-ArrMaz’s North America Manager of Coating Technologies, Christina Konecki, outlines how to properly evaluate granulation aid performance by simulating the granulation process and measuring granule hardness and moisture absorption in the lab.
On 19 November, Arkema, the global leader in Specialty Materials held the opening ceremony of the “Clean Water Project 2021” in Taiping Primary School, ZhaiHao Town, Rongjiang County, Guizhou Province, which was attended by Anqing Luo, Standing Committee, the Organization Department Director and the Party School Principal of the County Party Committee, Guofeng Huang, Party Group member of the County People’s Government, Director of the County Bureau of Education, Science and Technology, Geng Wang, Secretary of the Party Committee of Zhaihao Town, Yongliu Luo, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Trade Union President of Guizhou Phosphate Chemical Group, Hongjia Zhou, Deputy Director of the Office of Guizhou Phosphate Chemical Group, Ms. Julie Xiaoyu Zhang, President of Arkema Greater China, and Dr. Morgan Chen Ma, General Manager of Arkema-ArrMaz China.
